Crystal Stairs names Jackie B. Majors to serve as next CEO

November 8, 2010

Los Angeles, CA- Crystal Stairs has selected Jackie Beaubian Majors as the next Chief Executive Officer for the non-profit child development corporation. Majors, the current Chief Programs Officer for Crystal Stairs, will assume the role presently held by Holly J. Mitchell on December 1, 2010.

“The agency considered over 100 exceptional candidates from across the nation”, said Karen Hill-Scott, co-founder of the agency and chairwoman of the board. “Jackie brings more than 20 years of professional and instructional experience in early care and education and has earned a reputation as a trusted and respected leader. Equally important is that she shares a passion for bringing excellence and ingenuity to the field of child development. We are thrilled that she will be serving at the top level of Crystal Stairs and know that her skill sets and determination will lead us to continued success.”

As Chief Programs Officer, Jackie was responsible for the management and oversight of the entire program division at Crystal Stairs, including its Nickerson Gardens SAGE Child Care Center, the Child Care Subsidy, Resource and Referral, and Children’s Health & Wellness programs. She restructured the management and delivery systems within the division and was instrumental in implementing key innovations. Prior to joining Crystal Stairs, Jackie was Chief Program Officer for a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the greater Los Angeles community, providing programs to low-income, first generation high school students with dreams of going to college. Prior to that, she was Senior Vice President for a nation-wide child care organization where she was responsible for the management of program operations for over 200 child care centers and before-and-after school programs in California. Understanding the critical need for higher quality child care standards and enhanced early childhood professional development, Ms. Majors has also dedicated 13 years as an adjunt instructor in the child development department at West Los Angeles College.

“Joining Crystal Stairs as its CPO was an honor”, said Jackie Majors. “As a member of the Los Angeles community, Crystal Stairs has always been part of the local lexicon of advocacy-driven community institutions, rich in history and long on excellence. I have been honored to serve as CPO and am deeply humbled by the opportunity to serve this great agency as its next CEO.”

Jackie steps in at the right time. Recent cuts to child care funding and a national assault on social service programs make the work of the agency that much more important and critical. The agency recently completed a three year Strategic Plan and will be focusing much of its entrepreneurial energy on building social enterprise into the agency’s scope of work.

“This is a perfect opportunity for Crystal Stairs”, said outgoing CEO Holly J. Mitchell. “Jackie has her heart in early care and education, her head in business development and an eye on the future. The agency has chosen a leader who embodies the values of the agency, sees currency in its mission and will exercise an uncompromising commitment to getting the important work done.”

The agency began its search for a CEO after Ms. Mitchell announced her plans to pursue other endeavors. Crystal Stairs currently helps families find and pay for child care and works with child care providers to enhance the quality of care that they provide. The agency serves over 20,000 children from over 11,000 families and contracts with over 9,000 child care providers. Crystal Stairs has an annual budget of $131 million and recently celebrated its 30th anniversary.
