Unnatural Causes Screening Provides Glimpse into Trials of Staying Healthy for Black and Brown Communities

Los Angeles, CA- On March 16th, Crystal Stairs hosted a screening of the documentary “Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?” The screening was held at the Lucy Florence Cultural center in Leimert Park and was followed by a discussion featuring panelists Dr. Elaine Batchlor, Chief Medical Officer at L.A. Care William Hobson, President of Watts Healthcare Corporation, and Eduardo Gonzalez, from Korean Health Education Info and Research.

The screenings were part of an ongoing conversation that Crystal Stairs’ Children’s Health and Wellness Department is having with community residents and stakeholders. The agency has been remained committed to working to create greater access to health insurance, preventative health care and resources that promote healthier living and lifestyles. The agency has also joined the growing list of community advocates who believe that denied access to such health-related resources only exacerbates the conditions of working poor families already struggling with how to stay healthy and survive. In December, the department hosted a conversation on healthcare reform as part of the Obama transition team’s focus on overhauling the health care system in the United States.

The screening was well attended and provided a knowing glimpse into the hardships that many black and brown communities face in trying to stay healthy.
